What are modifications?
Modifications refer to any changes that have been made to the original specification of the bike. For example, this can include any adjustments which help to enhance the performance of the bike.
Modified bikes are often viewed as being more desirable, not only to the owner but also to thieves. They can also increase the bike's overall value, and if your treasured two-wheeler has been enhanced for speed, it's more likely to be viewed as a higher-risk. These are just some of the reasons why modifications can affect your premium and why it's important to check that your insurer provides the level of cover you would expect.
The importance of notifying your insurer
We understand that one of the joys of owning a motorcycle involves personalising it to your own tastes and making it individual to you. Whether you are making adjustments for cosmetic, performance, safety or practical reasons, you will need to notify us so that we can amend your policy accordingly. Failing to do this could result in your cover becoming invalid, and if you are involved in an accident or need to make a claim, it's possible that you may not be covered or will not receive the full amount.
You are also required to inform the DVLA if you have made any changes to the colour of the bike, the engine or the cylinder capacity, as well as some other adjustments. However you should also consider seeking advice from a mechanic or other professional if you are planning to make any considerable alterations.
